As we step into September, we embrace the transition from the vibrancy of summer to the grounding essence of fall. This month is not only about welcoming the Earth element, associated with the spleen and stomach in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), but also about finding stability and preparing for the Metal element that will dominate as we move deeper into fall. Our first yin yoga session is dedicated to these themes, focusing on Grounding + Stability.

Grounding with the Earth Element

In TCM, September is a time to nurture the Earth element, which represents nourishment, stability and grounding. It is the time to focus on practices that support the spleen and stomach, helping to stabilize our energy and foster a sense of inner calm. Grounding poses in yin yoga help us feel connected to the present moment, providing a solid foundation as we navigate the transition from summer to fall.

Stability for a Balanced Transition

As we prepare to welcome the Metal element associated with the lungs and large intestine, it's essential to establish a strong, grounded base. Stability in our practice helps us build resilience and clarity, making it easier to let go of what no longer serves us and welcome the introspective nature of fall.

Yin Poses for Grounding + Stability

RECLINED BUTTERFLY. A gentle heart-opener that stimulates the lungs and spleen, promoting relaxation and grounding. Allow yourself to sink into the support of the floor, connecting with a deep sense of stability.

BANANASANA. This reclined side stretch opens the chest and intercostal muscles, supporting lung function and inviting a sense of spaciousness and clarity. As you stretch, focus on creating a stable and supportive foundation.

SUPPORTIVE BRIDGE. Using props for support, this pose helps activate the spleen and stomach meridians while opening the chest. It encourages grounding through the pelvis and stability through the spine

DRAGON POSE. A grounding pose that targets the stomach and spleen meridians, helping to stabilize and open the hips. Feel the support of the Earth beneath you as you ground your energy.

SPHINX POSE. This gentle backbend stimulates the digestive organs and opens the chest. It's a supportive pose that encourages stability through the upper body and grounding through the lower body.

CHILD'S POSE. A deeply grounding pose that calms the nervous system and promotes a sense of safety and stability. Allow yourself to feel supported by the Earth as you rest and reconnect with your center.

SEATED FORWARD FOLD. Encourages introspection and grounding while gently stimulating the digestive organs. Use this pose to create a stable, calm space for yourself as you turn inward.

LEGS UP THE WALL. A restorative pose that promotes relaxation and stability. It's a beautiful way to ground yourself and release tension, preparing you for the introspective fall season.

SAVASANA. Finally, we settle in savasana. Here we absorb the echo of the stability and grounding we've cultivated throughout the session. Allow yourself to fully integrate the energy of the practice and transition into fall.

The Takeaway

September's yin yoga practice is a time to find grounding and stability as we transition from summer to fall. By focusing on the Earth element and preparing for the Metal element, we create a foundation of support that will guide us through the changes of the season. Join me for this session to honor the themes of grounding and stability, and set the stage for a balanced and harmonious fall.

I look forward to seeing you in class and exploring these themes together. Let's ground ourselves in the present moment and build a stable foundation for the introspective season ahead.
